Entry #1. The Thrill of the Roll: Exploring Mental & Physical Benefits of Roller Skating

Many people have tried to rollerblade or roller skate at least once in their life, but many people have also given up after their first effort and lost all confidence to try again. I’ve met people who couldn’t find their balance or fell consistently and just gave up on the interest. What many people don’t realize is that if you struggle rollerblading with inline skates, then try roller skating with a pair of roller skates! Some people struggle with one type but excel with the other. I have been roller skating and rollerblading since grade school, and it’s such a fun experience, a great way to clear your mind, and an exhilarating form of exercise! 

    There’s a common misconception that only young kids roller skate or rollerblade. People of all ages can have a wonderful time skating. The ride involves an extended version of walking, and the level of effort or energy needed is up to the rider. Starting slow is always a good idea when trying any new exercise or new activity, especially since this activity can result in getting physically hurt if you lose your balance. Once you get the hang of it though, it can be such a fun outdoor activity to enjoy. Feeling the wind on your face and reaching out to touch the leaves of a plant with your fingertips as you roll past is so liberating. Skating also gives me a sense of confidence and accomplishment. Nothing compares to the feeling of learning a new trick or landing something you’ve never been able to do before. Skating also helps me clear my mind, and let go of stress or anxiety. While it’s easy to forget because it’s so much fun, it actually burns so many calories and builds nearly all of the muscles because you’re moving your entire body to keep yourself in motion. Skating also increases blood flow and improves your flexibility! 

    It’s important to remember to be safe when skating. Even the pros fall, and they wear their protective gear. Helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads are the only things between you and the unforgiving concrete. Skating can get up to pretty high speeds, and one rock or crack in the way can trip you up. If this post encourages you to give skating another shot, just wear the appropriate gear and take measures to ensure your safety. Skating is a fun and generally safe activity, but expect to fall down once or twice while you’re finding your balance or trying it for the very first time. Keep in mind that practice is key, and there are so many benefits to skating.

  1. The first time I went rollerskating I had to use the cane to help me keep my balance. Even though it was very embarrassing because all around me was people who were rollerskating backwards and the kids were the only ones using the canes. I had such a blast rollerskating (even though I fell so many times) it was such a rush that I could care less if I was bad at it. Your passion for rollerskating makes me want to go back and try again without falling. (less likely)

  2. I have only gone rollerskating maybe five times I am not very good at it but I can see if you were good and how this would good mental and physical benefits. I could also see this being good therapy. Bailey Wieferich

  3. Wow it seems like you really know a lot about roller-skating! I used to roller-skate a lot when I was younger, but it seemed like it would've been too dangerous for me to pursue it haha.

  4. Agreed -- I cannot rollerblade to save my life but can successfully rollerskate and have fun.

    Nice balance of casual/professional in this post; the blend of personal experience while also making a larger point about the benefits of skating create an engaging post that is unique and authentic. Consider integrating your image into the body of your post instead of dropping it at the bottom. Overall, you are on the right track. Keep rolling!

       The Mayhem Man from the Allstate campaign is easily recognizable. We’ve seen him engage in various outrageous acts that create chaos in everyday life. In this ad, he portrays a bear that has just woken up from a nap and is eager to dig into the tasty snacks left in your car while you and your family are out hiking. Mayhem Bear | Allstate The comical relief in this ad makes it memorable. A man dressed in a tattered suit and bandages on his face is walking through trees and starts the ad by saying, “I’m a bear. I’m comin’ out of hibernation after the best nap of my life—and Papa is hungry.” He’s obviously not a bear, but he is trying to symbolize one and begins destroying the car in the same fashion that a real bear would.  This ad engages the audience, making them feel as if the vehicle shown belongs to them.
