In today's society, it's easy to get caught up in popular diets and fads. While many people are searching for solutions to address obesity or simply looking for healthier eating habits, others take advantage of this situation by flooding the internet with empty promises of a "perfect" body and glowing skin. The fundamental principles of our diet are obscured by pop culture, and as a result, people suffer. The internet has led many people to believe that carbohydrates and fats are unhealthy and that highly restrictive diets are the best way to lose weight. However, these myths are simply untrue, and science has demonstrated why.
Contrary to the claims made on TikTok, ingredients that contain fats or carbohydrates are essential for a balanced diet. (Merck) Extensive research has confirmed that macronutrients provide the body with the energy it needs. In biology classes, students learn about fats, carbohydrates, and proteins at the molecular level. This education suggests that those who are knowledgeable understand the roles each of these macronutrients plays in the body. However, there is a constant spread of misinformation surrounding these essential and complex components of our diet.
Fats are classified into two main types: saturated fats and unsaturated fats. Saturated fats, found in foods like burgers, tacos, and fried items, can raise levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood and contribute to heart disease. In contrast, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, present in foods such as seeds, nuts, and fish, can lower the risk of elevated LDL cholesterol and heart disease while also increasing levels of good cholesterol (HDL). (Mayo) Many popular dietary trends often overlook beneficial fats, focusing instead on the idea that fats are harmful and should be avoided. In reality, nutritional fats play a paramount role in maintaining human health and are vital for numerous bodily functions. They provide energy, support cell growth, and aid in the absorption of essential vitamins.
Similarly to fats, carbohydrates are often labeled as fattening and harmful to human health. Carbohydrates, or carbs, are naturally found in many foods, including vegetables, fruits, beans, and seeds. These macronutrients are essential for our bodies, providing the energy needed for everyday activities. While some internet influencers claim that carbs contribute to weight gain, they often overlook the fact that there is no research supporting the idea that healthy carbohydrates lead to being overweight. (Mayo) Influencers often promote their interpretation of science for financial gain, driven by clicks and likes, without disclosing all relevant information needed for an informed opinion.
Diets that claim eating one specific food will promote weight loss have been proven otherwise. Most people looking for ways to lose weight come across suggestions to eliminate specific foods entirely or only eat one group of foods. These diets are known to be unsustainable, meaning that once the individual stops the diet, the lost weight will return. Not only this, but these diets don't deliver the nutrients that the body needs. (Mayo) Without the right nutrients, individuals are not just missing out on benefits— they are actively damaging their health.
Ultimately, not everything on the internet is what it seems. Promises of losing weight effortlessly or achieving flawless skin are often empty. Instead of relying on online claims, it's best to consult with a professional or a doctor for any dietary or lifestyle changes. They will affirm that fats and carbohydrates can be beneficial, while restrictive diets can be detrimental. Healthy eating varies from person to person; there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Influencers often earn money from each click, like, and share, which may lead them to cut corners and omit important information to gain attention. Be cautious of fad diets, and prioritize advice from educated and experienced individuals.

Wow! I had no idea that a lot of the food we eat can be related to certain health problems. It is scary to think how easily individuals can be affected by certain symptoms just because they are unaware.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with this blog post's message about the dangers of misinformation surrounding diets and nutrition in today's society. The internet, especially platforms like TikTok, is flooded with misleading claims that vilify essential macronutrients like fats and carbohydrates, leading many to adopt restrictive and unhealthy eating habits. Your post does an excellent job of highlighting the science-backed importance of these nutrients for energy, bodily functions, and overall health. It’s frustrating how influencers prioritize clicks and likes over factual, balanced information, often promoting unsustainable diets that can harm people's well-being. I strongly support the call to seek guidance from qualified professionals rather than falling for internet trends. Nutrition isn’t one-size-fits-all, and a balanced, informed approach is key to achieving true health.
ReplyDeleteI like how you explained the importance of fats and carbs and why they’re so essential for a balanced diet. The part about the internet spreading so much misinformation is so true. It’s crazy how easy it is to get caught up in those trends. I also agree with your point about going to professionals instead of relying on influencers!
ReplyDeleteGood job on your final entries. You have become a strong blogger this semester who is able to create posts that both engage and inform the reader.
